What happened:
State lawmakers from both parties joined educators, parents, and the Pennsylvania Head Start Association at the Capitol on October 21 to warn against a proposed federal rule from the Administration for Children and Families that would eliminate many of the Head Start Program Performance Standards. Head Start serves about 30,000 children in Pennsylvania.
Why it matters for Pennsylvania nonprofits:
Many Head Start grantees are nonprofits, and they are also major local employers. Providers warn the changes could increase class sizes, reduce teachers and support staff, and weaken the health and mental health services the program provides — with ripple effects for working parents and local employers. Supporters cited polling showing broad support for Head Start among Pennsylvania voters across the political spectrum.
Where things stand:
PANO will monitor the federal rulemaking and share any opportunities for Pennsylvania nonprofits to weigh in.
